Big Hollywood

There's a great new website called Big Hollywood. It is all about Hollywood and the movies, with a healthy dose of politics and cultural commentary thrown in, all from a conservative point of view.
It is an opportunity for the conservatives who live and work in Hollywood to share their views, like this today from Ari David.

It's an awesome site, and another reason I almost never make it to my newspaper anymore.

I know one thing I'm doing this weekend.

Rent this movie!

My brother-in-law and his wife, who live in Australia, sent us videos from Amazon.com this year for Christmas. We had previously seen--and loved--one of them, Children of Heaven. Tonight we watched another of them, Vitus .

Vitus is a Swiss movie about a young boy who is a prodigy, his struggles to be "normal," and his relationships with his family. It was a wonderful family-friendly movie and was enjoyed by all of us. It also had really good music.

What a weekend!

Usually our holiday weekends tend to be laid back and uneventful. Since we spent the better part of 15 years trying to fight our way through Chicago traffic to get home to Indiana for the long weekends, now we generally stay put.

But this year we ventured to Wisconsin which is, as you know, on the other side of Chicago. We went for a wedding, and what a wedding it was! I always love a really good Lutheran wedding!

On Friday we went to the Milwaukee Zoo, which has been a favorite since we lived up there over 15 years ago. We enjoyed it, but it also made us appreciate how really wonderful our Fort Wayne Zoo is.

We decided to drive home on Saturday night to avoid traffic and be home for church, although we would have gladly visited our former congregation in Wisconsin if it hadn't been for that traffic thing. I'm glad we did, because we had incredibly clear roads. I've never seen them that empty.

Sunday we saw the third installment of Pirates. I've heard some say that they didn't enjoy this one, but maybe I just have lower expectations. I thought it was fun. We ate popcorn and laughed for almost three hours.

Monday I went with my mom to the cemetery to put flowers on some graves. There is a tradition in some areas around here to not only decorate military graves, but also those of other loved ones. Having lost both of her parents in the last eight months, this was a significant outing for my mom. The cemetery was just beautiful, with flower arrangements on a large portion of the graves. Afterward we drove around in the country and talked about people and places she remembers.

When we came home the guys were working in the yard. We had some weeds to pull:

They also planted eight little trees. It will be a long time before they amount to much, but they're planted.

I want to get some garden pictures posted later today.

Global swindle?

I would love for this video to be required viewing in every classroom where Algore's movie has been shown. The Great Global Warming Swindle is a BBC production. It is very scientific and rebuts many of the claims of An Inconvenient Truth.

I have only had time to watch part of it, but plan to watch the rest with my kids tonight.

Thanks to the Loopers who shared this!

Akeelah and the Bee

I know we're behind here, but we saw Akeelah and the Bee this weekend and absolutely loved it. If you haven't seen this movie yet, go rent it. It is a very sweet story about a little girl from south L.A. who becomes a champion speller. With the exception of a small amount of language there is nothing that even the most careful parent could object to.

I was a speller in grade school and junior high and I remember the tension, the huge butterflies in the stomach, and the excitement of spelling a word correctly. I also remember the devastation in eighth grade when I lost my last bee and knew that I was never going to the national spelling bee. We didn't do the methodical preparation that champions do now. (Did anyone do that 30 years ago?) And we certainly didn't have coaches. I had my word list from Scripps-Howard and that was it.

Anyway, the movie is worth seeing. My kids all loved it. And now Andrew wants to learn to spell.
